Description

In 1954 American Air Lines was in the market for a 75 to 100 passenger aircraft for its 188 Electra powered by four sleek turboprops instead of the usual large radial engines or jet turbines. The combination of engine and the Hamilton Standard propeller offered a much more reliable and fuel efficient aircraft that could travel at 375 mph for 2000 miles at an altitude of 20,000 – 25,000 feet. When production ended in 1961 there had been 170 Electras completed.

Team owner Walter O’Malley wanted a Lockheed L-188A Electra for his Los Angeles Dodgers baseball team and acquired one owned by General Motors. In the spring of 1961 it was given a customized paint scheme and interior and named Kay-O after O’Malley’s wife. After winning the 1963 World Series the aircraft received a special paint scheme and continued to transport the team until 1970 when the Dodgers purchased a Boeing 720. The Electra was sold to American Airlines as N1432 who in 1995 sold it to Air Spray in Canada. This aircraft was maintained by American Airlines who supplied a temporary nose cone for a portion of 1964, hence the orange nose.
