This elegant design is adapted from a hand-painted wallpaper made in China for export to the west. Peonies and mums, birds in flight and hanging baskets create an exotic look sought by an ever-expanding market in Europe and America in the 18th century. The original wallpaper is in the collections of the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation.
