"Is change for the better?"
4 stars"
Purchased on Mighty Ape

Spyro has had a long history. From the simple platforming game of early additions, to the later 3rd instalment of the original trilogy adding new ideas and formulas, to finally a switch in developers and many other different, though albeit less successful titles in the series.

With this new series a number of changes have occurred, and big ones at that. Now the titles focus more on fighting, adding close quarters combat, grapple maneuvers, and a magic like system with the fire breathing, or should I say elemental breathing? You see instead of the unlimited fire spray like attack from the originals, this new series has included a magic bar which is required for elemental attacks. Instead of just fire there are now four types of breath, and including co-op with the addition of another dragon, there are eight breaths in total. These all have different types of attacks, different affects and useful for different enemies. It's quite unique and very enjoyable using all these powers, except maybe poison… I never liked that one… but anyway, what is good about this change is that it now cannot really be compared with the original Spyros as the whole entire game is a different story.

Combat is a rather fun addition too, on top of the elements. Though it is not as elaborate as say, God of War, it is still quite enjoyable, and not too tedious unlike some other games.

Graphics-wise the game isn't gunna outrank Uncharted 2 but it is a vast improvement over PS2 definitely. Character's can be blocky here and there but the overall artistic direction is brilliant, even if a bit borrowed from fantasies like Lord of the Rings. I never found the slightly less than perfect graphics bad though. The game is quite pretty to look at really and all you need to see is some screenshots to agree. Combat and elemental powers are highlights, with set pieces quite nice, and character's probably least focused on but still good enough. With the cartoony aesthetics, it's easy enough to dismiss slightly blocky characters.

Now if artistic direction is borrowed, then the story must be pretty damn stolen! It is a near reflection of Lord of the Rings, with a Balrog like creature chasing you, a big flamey mountain you have to get to, Minas Tirith, Mines of Moria, etc, etc. It's not too bad, as it gives you a nice feel of epic, and it certainly isn't a terribly bad story, hence why Lord of the Rings is still remembered to this day! But ultimately you'd wish they were a bit more original.

The reason I'd only give this a four star is just because of the lack of originality to be honest. But really if this doesn't grind your gears (a delicious saying…) then I reckon this is a really enjoyable game, for kids and adults! There is plenty to do in the game, from collect upgrades, defeat bosses, find secrets, get armour, upgrade skills, a lengthy campaign and also just fun fights!

With the game now getting to the bargain bin price, why not pick it up and give it a chance?

Spyro was hard to control when flying and the game starts you off in a stupid place. Hubby never got past this part, haven't seen him so angry with a game in a while. He liked the old Sypro more

"Good game play, interesting two player "
5 stars"

Pretty good game so far have only played alittle but two player option has interesting side note of forced co-operation as you are bound to one another, once again wee tinkerbell like character helps to lighten what would otherwise be a far less amusing game.

"early days yet"

Was looking forward to this but finding it a bit disapointing. The colours are not up to the usual sharpness and where as in a lot of games you build up tolevels of difficulty after you know how and when things work, this seems quite difficult from the beginning, as i said, its early days yet, so fingers crossed it improves.
