The gameplay is fantastic and it looks pretty amazing! The only thing it lacks is a great storyline.
But the gameplay totally makes up for it. The monetary bonuses for each kill make it fun to plan out double & triple kill headshots.
In some ways this is one of the most amazing games available for the Vita (if you hate fps then you'll be all ‘double you tee eff–’, but that statement still stands). It has awesome graphics and sound, it's fast and dirty (who wants Hades-deep, angst ridden gameplay on a handheld-), and using the touch screen to jam a knife into an enemy's head never gets old.
There's one really frustratingly annoying thing about KZM though – you can't save unless you complete a whole mission. The game has small save points along the way in each mission that you'll return to if you die, but if you quit the game you'll have to return to the start of the next uncompleted mission. The only way around this is to use the Vita's low-power standby/sleep function while working through a level so you won't have to start from the beginning again. No matter how this could be argued for by a game designer, it's a really stupid move, especially for a portable title.
That said, it's a winner I most other ways. If (like me) you've found your existing titles a bit stale and you're looking for a reason to want to brag to the world that you're a Vita owner again, this should do the trick.
Killzone: Mercenary is a first-person shooter in the Killzone series, powered by the stunning Killzone engine. Developed specifically for the PlayStation Vita platform, Mercenary enhances the familiar twin-stick FPS control scheme with touch pad functionality for interesting new gameplay possibilities.
Comprised of nine single-player missions — each nearly an hour in length — Killzone: Mercenary delivers the full experience in a portable package. Completed missions unlock additional replay challenges, with a host of special objectives to accomplish. The game also boasts a full-fledged multiplayer mode with six maps tailored for eight players and three different game types, including the popular Warzone mode.
In keeping with the soldier-for-hire theme, every action in the game is rewarded. The better you perform, the higher your payout – not just in the single-player campaign, but also in the multiplayer mode. The wages you collect are deposited into a single bank account, so the money you earn in the campaign missions can also be used to buy gear and weapons for multiplayer matches, and vice versa.
As a mercenary, you’re free to decide which tactics and loadouts you’ll use to fulfill your contract; your employers will reward you with state-of-the-art weaponry and cold, hard cash as long as you get the job done. But what is the price of that freedom – and will you discover it before it’s too late?
