The Company Command teams of the Romanian infantry had at their disposal a variety of platoons and weapons, though not always equipped with the most modern equipment it was bravely handled by the men who operated them. The Company Command teams of the Romanian infantry had at their disposal a variety of platoons and weapons, though not always equipped with the most modern equipment it was bravely handled by the men who operated them. Each Company was allocated a compliment of 60mm mortars for immediate fire support. These could be issued individually to infantry platoons or could be kept together to fire bombardments.

60mm Brandt Mortar Model 1935

After the First World War French designer Edgar William Brandt, further improved the British Stokes mortar design by incorporating a finned projectile, with an improved gas check system, as well as a collimator-type sight. This gave better range and accuracy.

The new design features were added to both the 81.4mm and 60mm mortars. The “Stokes-Brandt” mortar design was highly successful and adopted by many nations during WWII, including Romania who adopted both types. The 60mm mortar consisted of three main components: the tube, the bipod and the base plate. It fired high explosive (HE) round. It had a maximum range of 2000 meters and could hit targets as close as 90 meters. The Brandt 60mm mortar was easy to assemble or disassemble, and it could be carried easily by its crew allowing it to go anywhere a man could walk, run, or climb, and it could be brought into action in a matter of minutes. A supporting bipod facilitated quick adjustments in elevation, and a steel base plate absorbed the recoil from each shot. An experienced crew could set up, fire off two or three rounds at maximum range, and due to the bomb’s long flight time be packed up and on the move again before the first round hit on target.

In Flames Of War

Under the Combat Attachment rules the 60mm Brandt Mortars can be allocated out to your Combat platoons. If you keep them together they are commanded by the 2iC Command Rifle team. They can fire bombardments by observing from their position.

Firing direct they can still fire over friendly teams with a Range 24”/60cm, ROF 2, AT 1, FP 3+. Firing bombardments they have Range 32”/80cm, AT 1 and FP 6. They are light and mobile and are rated Man-packed for mobility.
