This was a game I didn't follow and I didn't even know about it's existence until it was actually released, so it was a bit of an impulse buy. I'm not huge on MMOs and before this game I thought Batman was a Marvel character because I am completely ignorant of that stuff and Marvel was the only comic maker I knew, but I still think this game is a lot of fun. It's an enjoyable game even without an interest in MMOs or comics.
The game is off to a good start. The launch went relatively smoothly and downtimes have been short for the first week. There is a good amount of content, the combat is fun, the feats system translating to skill points is a nice touch, and the world is bustling and very exciting from my experience on a PvP server.
Some people may be wary that the level cap is so low at level 30. It definitely doesn't take long to reach max level, but that doesn't mean there is a shortage of content. The focus of the game isn't on the grind and more about opening all the cool things up for you quicker so you can actually do those cool things instead of enduring hours of grinding for the carrot on the stick. When you reach the level cap a whole bunch of quests, raids, hard mode alerts and duos open up to you. PvP is very diverse and overall the game has a lot to offer for such a new MMO.
The core gameplay provides a nice base for SOE to build on in the future as the combat is very enjoyable. It is intuitive in that you can only choose between 6 powers to use at a time. People used to other MMOs may not like that, but in my opinion it makes the combat a lot more strategic because you need to think about which loadout would suit your style and how to cover all the bases, instead of just spamming as many powers as possible between cooldowns. Also level differences don't play as much of a difference in this game. People who are skilled and knowledgeable about the combat will be able to beat people many levels higher than them as it is a more action and skill based system than other MMOs. There is a rock paper scissors mechanic in that blocks will beat combos, block breakers beat blocks, interrupts beat block breakers e.t.c.
The game is not without it's problems though since it is an MMO after all. It's still going through first week hiccups, but there has been nothing major in my experience. If they fix the bugs, explain the mechanics a little better for new users, change how they do the targeting priority, completely redo the chat system (which they are apparently doing in the next patch), remove the profanity filter, make the scaling a little smaller so things don't take up the entire screen, rework the interface a bit, and keep their promise of monthly updates, I think the game could grow into something great. A lot of these things aren't detrimental to the experience and could easily be fixed in the future as there is nothing wrong with the core gameplay.
The good far outweighs the bad in this game for me personally. The game is beautiful, there are only two cities, Gotham and Metropolis, but they feel so vast that it still seems like a DC Universe. The voice acting is spectacular as well. All in all, it has been a very enjoyable experience for me and I would highly recommend it.
