"Enough already on the grain!!!"
5 stars"
Purchased on Mighty Ape

People, people, people. The grain visible throughout this movie is INTENTIONAL and it is exactly what the director wants you to see. All of the comments about this Blu Ray release being poor quality and not being “high definition” are complete and utter rubbish. The grain was present in the cinema release as well for crying out loud! “Black Hawk Down” is another Blu Ray release where such grain is intentionally present.

As a matter of fact, 300 is placed high in Tier 1 – Gold (meaning EXCELLENT) of the Blu Ray picture quality thread in the AV Science forums. This placement is made based on the submissions of AV Science members who know their home theatre, movies and picture quality inside out.

Put simply, 300 is a “must own” for anyone with a high-def system. The audio (whilst not reference quality) ain't half bad either and Butler's performance as Leonidas is top notch. Recommended.

"'300' is all CGI sturm and drang"
4 stars"
Purchased on Mighty Ape

This is a very fine Blu-ray release. The video is solid, the audio is simply kick ass.

Yet, despite all this intentional degradation, there is also an undeniable beauty to the rough grandeur of '300's visuals. Sort of like a Pixar flick on steroids (without the talking animals), the crushed look Snyder intended gives many of the shots great power because they are so simple – exactly like comic book panels come to life. The obvious computer-generated landscapes his digital artists have created also give it that dazzling, pixilated eye-candy look of the coolest videogames

It is possible to ignore the film's intentionally degraded visual design and just enjoy the ride.

"Awesome"
5 stars"
Purchased on Mighty Ape

Looking at the reviews, people forget and assume that all picture quality on bluray will be totally perfect without any graininess. The movie was filmed in that manner ie the graininess was infect what the director intended. If you loved the movie, which I did then you'll love it on bluray. I have owned both DVD and bluray and picture quality is infect much better on bluray with the added graininess effect and sound quality is outstanding. Awesome

"View This Disc In Cinema Mode"
5 stars"

Having read a bad review on the quality of the blueray release it may be noted that in many cases a lot of movies transfered into 1080p will indeed appear very grainy at the best of times,I myself own a large collection of bluerays,at present I am eagerly awaiting the release of the more classic movies from years past, these releases will as with 300 contain the grainy look, however this is not a defect with the disc or picture, simply put it is the sharpest resolution you will get and in many cases depends also on the way the movie was shot by the director and the look he or she intended it to have. Suggestion, adjust the viewing option of you television,if you are viewing on a widescreen plasma or LCD then try setting the picture to Cinema, this option is the closest to what and how you saw the movie on the big screen, remembering that a standard picture setting on your television is usually the factory setting set by the manufacturer, picture quality can be adjusted to suit your taste.

"This! is! Hi-def! SPARTA! "
5 stars"

Fantastic version of one of the best battle films ever made. Don't be put off by other reviews citing picture graininess, this is part of the director's vision and evokes the graphic novel that inspired the film. Also includes nice extras and behind the scenes.

"Terrible Blu-Ray Quality" Purchased on Mighty Ape

Let me first point out that this movie is excellent, I love 300 the movie, and when I saw it was on Blu-Ray, I was excited.

Worst Blu-Ray video quality I have ever seen… It was so bad, that my first instinct was that my TV was broken, not that the quality could possibly be that bad.

It is so grainy, it actually looks like there are millions of little creatures on the screen crawling around messing up the picture.

Unless its cheaper than DVD, Dont even bother buying the blu-ray version… if your looking for a crisp sharp image, like I was, your wasting your money.

300 the movie – 4.5 Stars Blu-Ray image quality – 1 star (If that)

"Dont pay Blu Ray prices"
2 stars"

I agree with the grainy comment. Don't pay a Blu Ray price if you aren't getting the best. You may as well be watching regular analog TV on your LCD/plasma.

Buy it if its on special only.

Otherwise a great movie. Pity such a recent, and awesome, movie wasn't recorded in higher definition.

Personally I think scaling something up to a resolution higher than it was recorded in, and then selling it as 1080p rather offensive.
