Recorded and mixed in two sessions during 1996, The Clean yet again prove to be masters of musical innovation, three guys who can only amaze when they come together and throw all their ideas down on tape.
Now re-issued, Unknown Country, is The Clean at their most timeless, from the orchestrated etheral drone of opener ‘Wipe Me, I’m Lucky’ through to the immediately catchy ‘Twist Top’.
It is full of odd, quirky pop songs all mixed with a healthy dose of psychedelic rock. It is classic Clean, a little bit warped, sublimely brilliant and a lot of fun.
Formed in Dunedin in 1978, The Clean helped kickstart Flying Nun Records in the early 1980s and have gone on to become one of New Zealand’s most loved bands.
