Description

The Laser is a one- or two-person high performance sailing dinghy widely used for racing. First introduced in the late 1960s, the boat has enjoyed tremendous popularity: with 180,000 boats built (and over 100,000 sold in North America alone), the Laser continues to be the world's most popular singlehanded one-design racing class. For the beginner, the Laser offers thrilling performance in a simple and inexpensive boat that can be carried on top of a car. For the advanced sailor, it is the prime single-handed racing boat - the Laser has been selected for the U.S. Sailing Association (USSA) Championship, the U.S. and World Youth Championships, and the Pan-American Games, and is a standard of collegiate and club racing. The Laser made its Olympic debut in 1996 in the men's single-handed event. The Complete Book of Laser Sailing is the definitive book on the Laser. The book tells the beginner everything she needs to know to rig, sail, race, maintain, transport, and store the boat. For the more experienced sailor Dick Tillman devotes chapters to racing tactics, advanced techniques upwind and offwind, and training and physical conditioning. The new edition will also include several new interviews with current champion Laser racers on various topics of interest to owners and racers of the boat (e.g., rig modifications and Masters racing), and updated listings of the results of major competitions since 1990. The Laser never seems to go out of style. With a new look and updated information, there's no reason why this book, too, shouldn't stay around for another generation.

Author Biography:

A graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, Dick Tillman won the first three Laser North American Championships in 1971, 1972, and 1973. He was a member of the U.S. Olympic sailing team in 1976. In 1981 and 1982 he won the Laser North American Masters competition. Most recently he was a bronze medal winner in the Laser event in the 1998 Nike World Masters competition. From 1981 to 1991 he served as the Executive Director of the International J/24 Class Association. He is currently president of U.S. Windsurfing (a national class association for windsurfing) and sits on the board of the U.S. Sailing Association (formerly the U.S. Yacht Racing Union [USYRU]).
