Description

Fyodor Karamazov is a dreadful man. No one likes him, not even his own three sons from two marriages. His eldest son, Dmitri, a sensualist, loves wine and women, spending much of his time and money on both. He only comes back home for his inheritance, which he thinks his father is keeping from him. The second son, Ivan, is a rationalist. Clever and insufferable, he is weary of all the suffering in the world and is secluded by his egotism and morose nature. The third son, Alexei, or Alyosha as he is known as, is clearly unlike the rest of his family. He is unanimously liked and is an ardent learner of the Russian conventional monastery. Set in the 19th century Russia, this novel delves deeply into the ethical debates of the time, including morality, God, and free will. The spiritual drama depicts moral struggles that whirl around faith, reason and doubt. Considered one of the supreme accomplishments in literature, the central theme of The Brothers Karamazov revolves around patricide.
