Description

One of the earliest memoirs of an American capitalist, this volume appeared shortly after the 84-year-old author's death in 1919. Its real-life, rags-to-riches tale recounts the Scottish immigrant's rise from telegrapher's clerk to captain of industry and steel magnate. Includes "Gospel of Wealth," an influential essay outlining Carnegie's philanthropic views. Reprint of the Houghton Mifflin, Boston, 1920 edition.

Author Biography:

Scotland native Andrew Carnegie (1835-1919) emigrated to Allegheny, Pennsylvania, in his youth and through voracious reading and personal initiative became one of the richest men in American history. Industrialist, innovator, scholar, and philanthropist, he gave away more than 90 percent of his wealth for the establishment of libraries, schools, and hospitals.
