Description

This book tells of a single weekend in 1958 when the Paul Bley quartet is playing at the Hillcrest in Los Angeles, a real club. We learn about the interactions of Paul Bley and Charlie Haden, Billie Higgins, Dave Pike, and the innovative Ornette Coleman. Along for the ride is Sanford Dorbin, a West Coast jazz poet. The incidents are based on real events, as the main characters are real jazz performers when they started their amazing careers. Included are pictures of the jazz musicians and West Coast places important to the narrative.

Author Biography:

Powell, a professor of Classics, was a close friend of Sandy's, and the author of many books, including Homer and the Origin of the Greek alphabet (1991), Classical Myth (eighth edition, 2014), and translations of the poems of Homer, Vergil, and Hesiod.
