If you have never read “Swallows and Amazons” by Arthur Ransome, you may enjoy this film, but for those of us who know and love his books so well it was very disappointing. I realise that it's impossible to make a film from a book without making changes, but there were just too many changes in this one. The characters of the children, the main protagonists, have been altered so that Susan, the competent elder sister, becomes more of a child and far less able, while older brother John morphs into a moody teenager. I could cope with Russian (-) spies, and the changes to the person and character of Captain Flint, but, all in all, there were just too many alterations and we gave up watching. I will give the DVD away.
