Description

Eleven-year-old Grace Anderson thinks she is about to experience one of the greatest moments of her life, but it turns out to be the worst. After she accompanies her step-dad to the hospital to see her mom and new baby brother, she finds out that her mom has done something that could split the family up for good: she tests positive for an illegal substance. The baby is taken away and put in foster care and Grace is taken from her mom and has to live with her grandfather. As her life is completely turned upside down, she wonders who she will eventually live with -- her grandfather, her mother, or her father, who has suddenly entered the picture for the first time in nine years.

Author Biography:

Dave Webb is an author and educator from Pennsylvania. He has been an elementary school teacher for 30 years and is a member of the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI). He wrote about his career in education in a memoir entitled Mr. Nomad: Tales of a Traveling Teacher, which was reviewed in a print edition of Publishers Weekly in November, 2016. Webb started his writing career in his teens as a sports writer for a weekly newspaper, and then moved on to writing entertainment reviews and feature stories for the Times Leader newspaper in Wilkes-Barre. Soon he felt a calling to the field of education. He has taught at elementary schools in three states: Pennsylvania, Virginia, and North Carolina. After becoming a teacher, Webb had an itch to do more writing. That's when he decided to write a trilogy of humorous children's books with story lines loosely based on true events. Thus, the Slinky Inkermann series was born. Slinky Inkermann and the Crazy Contest (intended for readers ages 8-12) was first published in 1996. A second edition came in 1998, followed by two sequels. The third edition of the Crazy Contest book is available at www.bn.com and www.amazon.com, as is the third book in the series, Middle School Mania, published in 2012. Thousands of copies of these books are in circulation around the country. Webb's most heart-wrenching book is a short novel for upper middle grade readers entitled Amber. It was published in 2007, with cover photographs of actress and model, Bella Thorne taken by her mother, Tamara Thorne. The book tells the story of a young girl whose troubled home life causes her to hear disturbing voices. She tries to deal with her problems by escaping into a type of fantasy world, since her mom is almost never available to help her. Eventually she runs away and meets up with another girl on the run, who shows her how to survive on the street. This emotion-filled story is fast-paced and addresses the problem of domestic abuse and neglect from a child's point of view. It is intended for readers ages 11 and up (due to its emotional intensity) and is available in both print and e-book versions. A sequel, Amber Lee, was published in March of 2013.
