The F104 was designed as a fighter interceptor during the mid 1950's. It's very impressive high-speed performance and versatile design resulted in the F-104 being used for decades after it's initial deployment by the United States Air Force. Allied air forces including Canada and West Germany used the F-104 extensively as part of their Air Force units.
