Description

Adaleigh, a young Cajun girl, has the envie for her grandmother's chicken and sausage gumbo. But there is a problem. It's summer, and Mamere does not cook her gumbo until the weather has just the right chill in the air. Adaleigh tries various get-gumbo techniques, including learning to ask for it in French, but she will have to wait. This picture book for young readers, peppered with Cajun words, celebrates the Cajun culture and the importance of generational bonds.

Author Biography:

Mary Beth Broussard's love of reading came from her family's many trips to the Alexandria Public Library in Louisiana. She initially worked as a journalist but later returned to school to become an occupational therapist working with children with special needs. After working as a travel therapist, she and her husband, Craig, decided to make Lafayette their home, enjoy the Cajun culture, and start a family. Mary Beth found a way to combine her love of books, Cajun culture, and children, and Gumbo Weather was the happy result. A native of New Iberia, Louisiana, artist Paul Schexnayder is frequently featured as a festival poster artist, and his work has been placed in galleries and shows throughout the state. The author/illustrator of four previous children's books, including The Gumbo Gators, published by Pelican, he has worked as a visual arts teacher in area schools since 1989.
