Author Biography:

John Hume, born in 1937, started life as a teacher in his native Derry, becoming involved in politics in the early 1960s. Hume recently retired from the Assembly in Northern Ireland. He is president of the Social Democratic and Labour Party, which he helped found, a member of the British Parliament and a member of the European Parliament. He is widely regarded as the 'architect of peace' in Northern Ireland.
