Katy
Perry released her third album Teenage
Dream yesterday; her second album as Katy Perry (her first
album in 2001 was credited to her birth name Katy Hudson).
Teenage
Dream smells good. Yes, you read that right, it smells good.
The album cover has been infused with a cotton candy (or candy floss) scent, and
it smells very sweet. Keeping with the theme of things sugary and sweet Perry
enlisted the help of painter/sculptor Will Cotton to create the
artwork for the album. He is known for his creating surreal landscapes composed
of sweets inhabited by beautiful women. Check out the video below which takes
you behind the scenes of the making of Teenage
Dream's album packaging.
As awesome as a scented album cover is, I hope that this doesn't become a
trend in the music industry. There are some artists for whom this would be
totally unsuitable; imagine an Ozzy
Osbourne album that reeks of beer, cigarettes, and sweat LOL.
Are you in a band? Have you recently recorded an album? Are you stuck for
ideas for an album cover? How about following Weezer's lead,
they slapped the face of their favourite Lost character on
their new album cover. Not one of the lovely female cast members. Nope, they
named their forthcoming album after Hurley,
and slapped their (equally loveable) namesake's mug on the cover.
Regardless of what you think of the album cover (beauty is in the eye of the
beholder remember), it's about how the music sounds right? Except if your
name is Paris
Hilton :P.
Influential multi-platinum, Grammy-winning alternative rock band Weezer have
linked up with Epitaph Records to release their new album, Hurley,
on September 13th. “Memories”, their first single from the
album can be streamed on their MySpace
page (remember those?). Hurley is produced by Cuomo and
Shawn Everett (Raditude, Phantom Planet, Ozomatli), and promises to be
“a high-energy rock album that wastes no time.” Good 'cause I hate
having my time wasted with bad music! Preorder Weezer's Hurley
album now. There is also a deluxe
edition which features four extra songs.
On a personal note, Spike
Jonze's video for Weezer's “Island In The Sun” is one of my
favourite music videos evah! So many cute animals, and of course the
flying chimpanzee! Apparently MTV rejected the original video for
“Island In The Sun” so they linked up with Spike Jonze and made a new video
at the last minute. Check out the video after
the jump.
