Gorilla Gaming Rigs: The Gorilla in the Mist

By Andi

We've talked about a number of our Mighty Gorilla Gaming Rigs here recently, showing off our latest builds of The Baboon and The Silverback, but one we always have trouble showing off is the Gorilla in the Mist. He's an elusive rig, that one.

Of course, the problem resides in the fact that technically it doesn't exist. Well… not until you say it does.

You see, the Gorilla in the Mist is our Gorilla Rig that you guys build for us. It could be a simple tweak to one of our pre-existing rigs, or a complete “From the Ground Up” custom assembly. It's really your call.

We certainly have our favourites amongst these builds, indeed those spec'd out for pure raw power are impressive to benchmark but we tend to lean towards those more like this one. With a perfect balance of unstoppable power and truly stunning component decisions…

We love to show off, so excuse us if there's a little too much technobabble.

First of all, we have the ASUS MAXIMUS VII Ranger Intel Z97. Being the heart of the computer, this thing beats so hard it'd put a hole in your chest. Featuring the Intel Z97 chipset with M.2 support, you'll see up to 10GB/s of data transfer.

If that wasn't enough, Intel's LAN significantly reduces the processor's workload, so there's more power going where it matters – your gamplay.

It also supports the 5th/New 4th/4th Generation Core™ i7/Core™ i5/Core™ i3/Pentium®/Celeron® Processors, so it'll handle the meanest CPUs your can throw at it.

Which is exactly what we did.

Plugged into the motherboard we've got an Intel Core i7 4.0GHz Quad Core Processor Processor. With Quad Core processing, and a Turbo Max speed of 4.4GHz, it'll take a lot for this thing to break a sweat.

And to make sure that's true, we've strapped a Corsair Hydro Series High Performance CPU Cooler to it. Not only does this direct cooling directly to the CPU, but it also works to remove heat from the case entirely. The result is an overall cooler case that benefits all the components.

With the amount of work a computer of this power will be doing, there'll be a lot of balls up in the air. Which is why we've installed 2×8GB G.SKILL Ripjaws 1866MHz RAM to make sure nothing gets dropped.

Just to get things running that extra bit faster, we've also put not just one, but two 128GB Corsair Force Series 3 Solid State Drives so boot times are lightning fast, and programs run super smooth.

And by setting them up in Raid 0 configuration, the result is one super fast drive. Striping the drives allows the system to read off both at the same time, resulting in nearly half the load time when compared to a single drive.

Now, all this grunt and power would be a bit underwhelming if your games weren't absolutely stunning – but we've got that sorted with the ASUS GTX780 Ti DirectCU II Graphics Card.

It's got 3GB of the latest GDDR5 RAM, making sure your games will run with all sliders set to Ultra. When we put it through our benchmark, it spat out a score of 16,500!

Now this is where we showed some restraint. We only have the one GPU installed in this rig. However, with the motherboard's ability to support SLI, there's no reason another graphics card can't be installed at a later date for even more eye-blistering visuals!

Now, we've got the amazing looks inside the computer, but what about outside? All of this is gorgeous hardware is housed in the stylish NZXT H440 Silent Mid Tower Case.

Complementing the Red/Black visuals of all that ASUS hardware, the H440 has the perfect sleek black finish, with just the right amount of red accented throughout.

Not only does the case's cable management ensure optimum airflow throughout, but it also keeps with the clean and tidy look of all the components – there's even a gorgeous red cover for the power supply!

So there you have it: Just one of the countless possibilities available for you.

To get your very own custom gaming rig like this, all you have to do is order your own Gorilla in the Mist and we can start building your dream gaming machine.
