What Everybody Ought to Know About Socks

By Rebecca

Socks have a pretty bad rep. They're synonymous with a bad gift, confound everyone by getting gobbled by the washing machine time and time again and consistently make you late when you can't find a matching pair.

But there are some things you don't know about socks that we think you should take into consideration before judging them quite so harshly…

1. Socks are involved in several awareness days
In New Zealand we've got Red Sock Day where we celebrate leadership in action, what it means to be a New Zealander, and remember a kiwi legend. Over in Australia there is Odd Sock Day which helps raise awareness around mental illness and is aimed at reducing the stigma associated with it and worldwode is Rock Your Socks Day, celebrated on World Down Syndrome Day to raise awareness for the syndrome. There are plenty more out there, where people use socks as a way to express themselves or a cause they believe it.

2. They help with sweat distribution for your feet
The human body sweats a lot during any given day and your feet are generally agreed to be one of the biggest culprits as you can lose up to half a litre of sweat per day through them. Socks provide an awesome service to your body by helping to absorb that sweat and move the moisture from the sweatier parts to areas of the foot where the moisture can evaporate. Pretty neat huh!

3. Socks are mentioned over 10,000 time a week on twitter…
Apparently the world loves talking about socks. Putting on a fresh pair of socks is mentioned over 10,000 times a week on twitter alone. Looks like we're all a bit hypocritical and the joy of fresh socks makes many people quite happy!

4. They can be re-used and re-cycled in so many ways!
There are hundreds of ways to re-purpose an odd sock, or a pair that have just worn through, which make them the greatest accessory ever. Use them as dust rags, sock puppets, create a homemade hacky sack, fox tail or jump rope, use them to help protect your valuables on moving day, make them into sock buns, draft stoppers, or make a difference and donate them to your local charity.

5. Socks were historically a luxury good for wealthy people
Back in the 10th century, socks were a revered gift and often reserved as a luxury item for the richer citizens. Due to the difficulty of producing them even royalty appreciated socks as a gift. Oh how the times have changed, maybe we should realise how lucky we are that they are so abundant these days!

We hope that those facts have helped change your mind on socks and you now love them as much as we do!
