"Inglorious Fruits & Vegetables" - Giving Produce a Second Chance at Life

By Paul

Like us, you may have come across this video on the internet recently. As lovers of food, we think this clever marketing campaign is a great way of raising awareness about food waste.

Intermarché (French supermarket) launched their “Inglorious Fruits & Vegetables” campaign comprising of a film, print, poster and radio campaign. The campaign celebrates the beauty of the “Grotesque Apple”, the “Ridiculous Potato”, the “Hideous Orange”, the “Failed Lemon”, the “Disfigured Eggplant”, the “Ugly Carrot”, and the “Unfortunate Clementine”. These fruits and vegetables are normally rejected by supermarkets and never make it to the shelf. But really, there's nothing wrong with them – they have the same nutritional value as their better looking counterparts and consumers are willing to pay for them. Intermarché offered their “Inglorious Fruits & Vegetables” for 30% less. That's a big saving on your weekly shop and gives fruits like the “Failed Lemon” a second chance in life.

What do you think about this campaign? Should New Zealand supermarkets jump on the bandwagon? Would you buy inglorious fruits and vegetables for 30% less? Let us know in the comments below!

I definitely would. At the very least it makes the fruit more amusing.

Agreed - what's special about an apple that's the same as all the others? :P
