"Incorrect information everywhere"
5 stars"

I believe both the Xbox One and the PS4 will be great consoles for the next gen. However the Previews here on Mighty Ape contain large amounts of unsubstantiated opinions and incorrect information about both consoles. So my advice – be wary and do your own research!

Both consoles are very similar to one another and I doubt you will see much graphical difference in quality between them and, if you do, it won't be evident until late in the life cycle of these consoles. If you are evenly slightly interested in motion and voice controls, then Xbox is the way to go with Kinect 2.0. On the other hand the PS4 comes in slightly cheaper (due to a lack of bundled PS Eye) so if price is relevant then this might be your deciding factor. If you're into online gaming, Xbox have been the front-runner in the past and have offered dedicated servers to developers through the Microsoft Azure cloud. But PS4 will be right on their heels with Gaikai.

Overall, I might come down to the games you prefer. Many games from many publishers will be multi-plat so (again) both consoles will be great! But each console will have its exclusives. Be wary of the Previews on here and go out and do your own research about the consoles and their exclusive games. Figure out which games and features suit you best! I truly believe both consoles will be successful.

November / December can't come soon enough! Happy gaming New Zealand!

"Break Down On Key Features"
5 stars"

I'm going to give a brief breakdown of the big selling points and compare them to it's competitor to help you choose which console bests suits you. (I will be getting a Xbox One at launch because I like it's game line up better)

One of the biggest selling points of the Xbox is it's new cloud system. Microsoft has brought a huge amount of cloud storage which will allow you to keep your saves online and be able to play your save games from friends consoles. It will also greatly improve multiplayer for the Xbox by giving the developers opportunities to have dedicated servers etc. This is very good news for people who like to play FPS games.

Playstation has also got a cloud based service but is using theirs in a slightly different way. They are going to use Gaikai to stream games from the PS3. Further on in this generation you can expect both cloud services to do essentially the same thing however, so it really depends on what suits you best to start with.

Both consoles have the ability to capture game play footage with and without a capture card. However if you do not use a capture card the amount of time you will be able to record at once is 5 minutes on the Xbox and 15 minutes on the Playstation.

Both consoles come with a headset. The Xbox headset will have the better quality and should be more comfortable to wear as it rests on your head, as opposed to the playstation headset that is just like a single earpiece phone headset that you would expect out of a cheap brick.

The playstations controller has built in rechargeable which is definitely a plus as the Xbox stills comes with a battery pack. A plug and play charge kit is a additional $40 for the Xbox.

Price is obviously a big deal and up until the Fifa deal was in the Playstations favour. Now the pricing on the Xbox is pretty much the same as Playstation because it comes bundled with a game. But people need to make sure to know that only Day One consoles come with Fifa and that it is also a digital download, not a disk. This means it will require time for anyone without fast internet as the size of the download will most likely be upwards of 7 gigs.

Finally games, the most important part. I will just list of the flagship exclusive games for each console and let people do their own research. Playstation- Killzone Shadowfall, Knack, Driveclub Xbox- Dead Rising 3, Forza 5, Ryse: Son of Rome Both consolses also have various Indie titles and Free to play games.

"Xbox one back in the game!"
5 stars"

Xbox one is now looking like a solid choice!

I think Microsoft has made the right move removing the DRM. Some of the launch window games look really good e.g Forza 5, Titanfall battlefield 4 and Call of Duty Ghosts.

There also will no doubt be some other gems out next year like Halo!

I would recommend getting this console now, I do not think it will disappoint.

"Too late Microsoft."
2 stars"

The hellish DRM which would have taken our rights as consumers away has been removed, but it shows Microsoft's greed. Their removing it is only to save them, not because they care about the consumer. The PS4 is definitely the best next gen console at the moment, as it also has many great looking exclusives.

"Back in the Saddle!!"
5 stars"

This huge U-Turn by M$ happened just before I hit the go button on a PS4 preorder.I still love my 360 so was reluctant to change over to Sony. Now they have backed down after such a huge slap down/backlash by the gamers that made their system succesful in the first place.I'm back on board. Some of the game trailers from E3 look almost too life like !!

"Looks good, but..."
4 stars"

It's a shame that NZ doesn't get the option of a free copy of Forza 5 at launch, like in the UK. If it did, I'd be pre-ordering, as it is, I can wait! I look forward to seeing what developers can do with kinect 2.0, both for dedicated games, and enhancing regularly controlled games.

"Now that they've corrected themselves....."
4 stars"

Before the recent reversals in policies from Microsoft, I absolutely hated the Xbox One. Now I will be getting one, but not before a PS4. There is some cool features, such as multi-tasking and Twitch.tv live streaming. But nothing that the PS4 doesn't have. So its more for the games, as I see the consoles being almost identical in a lot of ways. Sunset Overdrive and Quantum Break have my attention, along with Forza 5. But compared to the PS4's lineup, its a little lackluster, in my opinion.

Its still a very powerful system and I think it'll be pretty good.

TV Features will never work in New Zealand, $100 more and less powerful than a PS4.

"Xbone 180"
1 stars"

Some people are a little too easily persuaded. Only a fool would trust an anti-competitive corporation like Microsoft, especially after what they tried to pull with this console. The truth is they tried to sell you a lie and had absolutely no scruples about doing it at all either. For shame.

"They will just bring all the bad stuff back"
1 stars"

More games are going to require a “season pass” or “premium membership” in order to access all the features of the game. So that would make lending pointless in the end anyway. This is the Microsoft's way of making things “OK”. Once you have bought the console, behind the scenes they are striking deals that force people to buy a special code to play online (on borrowed) on top of the xbox gold price thus getting their way in the end

"Some people are unbelieveable..."
1 stars"

It's amazing and ridiculous seeing so many people jump back on board with Microsoft; a company who not 2 weeks ago were literally going to screw you so badly, all because they changed a few things.

It's literally like saying, “Ok guys, we changed a few things now, we're a good company again, right- Right, guys- Please say yes. We promise not to screw you again. We promise.” It's so insulting to the customer that it makes me sick to the stomach just thinking about it.

Their lack of policy and willingness to change what was planned is outrageous. Who on earth could possibly trust a company who freely changes things in a flash just because someone on the internet decided they didn't like it-

Also, they were forced to change their hardware making it even less powerful than before, because they were too lazy to fix the overheating problems.

Simple, stick with your 360 (if you have one, like me) or get a PS4 (which I am also doing).

"Still lacking oomph"
2 stars"

Removing the DRM was a good move, but the XBox One is still a slower machine with less graphical oomph than the PS4 while still costing $100 more.

Where the Xbox One is locking up 3GB DDR3 RAM with running the OS, the PS4 uses 1GB GDDR5 RAM. The GPU of the PS4 is capable of a third more TFLOPs than the GPU of the Xbox One as well.

Some analysts have stated that the difference of over all performance between the systems is about the equivalent of a Wii U.

The Xbox is back in the competition, but it still remains overpriced and less value per dollar than the PS4 at this point.

  • Price of a mid tier PC
  • weaker than PS4 or any same priced PC
  • Fewer games than any other platform
  • no variety in the games (shooters, racing, brown and grey)
  • no indie support or games
  • no backwards compatibility
  • Still have to pay $70 a year for online which is free on nintendo or PC
  • More ads
  • Mandatory Kinect which must be connected
  • Games priced at $120
  • No online price degradation for XBL (games that sell for 50 bucks on day one will stay 50 bucks for ever)
  • $100 controllers
  • few to no sales on XBL or any retailer
  • This is still being sold by the same company that tried to slide DRM and no used games under your feet, do not trust them in the future as in terms and conditions it states they can change anything at anytime
  • Huge
  • no replaceable HDD
  • most media features of Xbox one will not be available in NZ
  • few first party developers

Come on guys, at this point why have you not just built a PC or moved to anything else-

"Wait till Stable and avoid big brother"
1 stars"

Problem I have with getting on launch consoles from Microsoft or Sony is that they historically have a very high failure rates. Wait until versions of the consoles are released later which don't overheat. Nintendo are the only company to get launch day consoles from because they build them to last. N64 had a lifetime guarantee. The other problem I have with the Xbox One is that the Kinetic sensor has to always be plugged in and it is always listening to you. Microsoft are basically bugging your house with this console.

Get a WiiU now play it for a couple of years and then get either the PS4 or Xbox One once a better version of the console has been released. Thats what I will be doing.

"Xbox One + Kinect + FIFA 14"
5 stars"

Xbox is offering a better deal than PS4 with all these features, hardware is pretty similar, I have heard people say Xbox One has a better controller than PS4 plus they have Forza so its worth getting Xbox One than PS4. I play FPS on PC so FIFA 14 + Forza sealed the deal for me.

But I have to thank Sony for making sure Xbox backtracked on all of their controversial proposals

"Just wait."
1 stars"

If i threaten genocide and then change my mind at the last minute because i want to be popular with the ladies im still a ****. Xbox has shown their true colors with the DRM band wagon and they will find another way to slip in their policies through the backdoor. The fact that they even considered it as being a good idea just shows how out of touch they are with their market. Personally i'd buy a WiiU so i can play the 89th rehash of the same Mario game before i'd spit in the Xbox's direction.

"Xbox One Eighty - Buyer beware."
3 stars"

With removed DRM and other such nonsense, the console seems to be at least okay now when it comes to running it. It will need to be connected when you use it the first time so it can patch all the problems.

However, a word of warning. If it is this easy to patch, they may update it back to how it was at a later date considering the EULA saying they can make changes whenever they want.

"Still never going back"
4 stars"

Ok, they managed to save themselves from a multi-billion dollar mistake. SO. WHAT. It was hard fought For, and we HAD to fight for it. Doesn't that say something about Microsoft. Okay onto on to more rational points, such as horrible specs, and don't use the argument of the f**king “Cloud” processing, all the severs are american, this will limit us here in NZ, and will most likely lead to massive amounts of lag, unless you pay a few bloody hundred dollars a month for UFB. My last point kinetic…I will never pay an extra hundred dollars for a spy cam and worst specs. In summary, for the first time in two generations the king has returned.

Sorry Mirco$oft I've been converted and I'm never looking back

"Too little, too late."
2 stars"

Even if you are willing to forget that Microsoft tried to totally bone us from the beginning (and would have likely succeeded if Sony followed suit), the fact is that this is still a more expensive, less powerful machine than the PS4, that comes with an always-on, always-listening, pervy spy camera.

The launch was an utter mess and the console and everyone connected to it (yes, even you, the consumer) are going to feel the fallout from that disaster for the first couple of years at least. Microsoft will need to earn back the massive profits they lost somehow… And they will probably resort to financially screwing over the people who are already invested in the console in order to do that.

Just saying… I would wait and see how things pan out instead of ordering this based on a blind allegiance to the brand name.

2 stars because at least they sort of listened to their customers… Even if we had to threaten them with our wallets first.

"Clear Choice For a Kiwi"
5 stars"
Purchased on Mighty Ape

It may be $100 more than its adversary, however the extras received more than make up for this initial price difference: Fifa 14, a carry case, and a kinect unit – fantastic value. As for why I purchased this over the PS4, the main factors were the controller, Titanfall, and its ship date: the controller and its asymmetrical analog sticks offer so much more in terms of both comfort and precision; Titanfall is by far the best exclusive I've seen on the two consoles – the next Killzone installment just doesn't stack up; and the ship date on a PS4, if preordered now, is early 2014 (also the X1 ships a week earlier than the PS4). I was initially skeptical as to Microsoft's strategy with the X1, but since the correction of the hiccups seen early on, they've won me over – big ups to them, and I can't wait for it to arrive!

"Do You Trust Microsoft-"
3 stars"

While it is great Microsoft has reversed many of its policies for the XBox ONE to make it a buyable product I still feel pretty suspicious of The XBox ONE. These policies can be drip fed right back in if Microsoft so chooses.

For now the XBox ONE is on a more even footing with the PS4. The thing is, how many features will actually work in New Zealand- Sure they work in the USA but will they work here- Will you actually use the Kinect- You have to pay for it but will you use it-

Now that both the XBox ONE and PS4 are region free. This means if we want to, we can buy in titles not released in our region. That's great because we are not excluded from any titles and games are cheaper to buy and ship from overseas than buying them in NZ anyway.

I think the PS4 has the edge in processing power. Only just but it does have the edge and it is $100.00 cheaper. Both consoles will pretty much have the same feature set that work in New Zealand. Both consoles have good exclusive IP and many of the most popular IP's are multi platform anyway

For me I'm choosing PS4 at launch and then maybe an XBox ONE a year out from launch. Mainly because I still don't trust Microsoft not to pull a sneaky one on the consumer once they get XBox ONE established in the marketplace.

"Good now, but not great."
3 stars"

Even though Microsoft thankfully did a complete turn around and removed all restrictions you shouldn't just click the Buy button idly.

For starters let's talk power. The Xbox One has eight gigabytes of DDR3 RAM under the hood. The PS4 has the same amount only it is GDDR5. Now both types have their advantages and disadvantages, but the GDDR5 will be capable of producing better graphics and larger environments. But it also isn't as good as DDR3 CPU wise, basically that means stuff like physics calculation could potentially be ever so slightly slower.

Ignoring the different types of RAM anyway we'll go down to how each console is using it for games. The Xbox One has 3GB reserved for the operating system. The PS4 only has 1GB reserved for its OS. You should be seeing which one is better game wise at this point. This comes down to the PS4 allowing for bigger and better environments compared to the Xbox One. (Yeah, yeah I know. But games are developed across all platforms; won’t they be built to meet the Xbox One’s RAM as opposed to the PS4’s- Well yes big blockbuster multi-platform titles will probably. But you’re still probably going to see better performance on the PS4.)

Finally, you still have to pay for Xbox Live. But wait, Sony will now be making you pay for PS+ so what is the problem here- Well Sony won’t be blocking you out of online services like QuickFlix for not having PS+. So if you were considering buying an Xbox One for the multi-media side of it, it may be best to get a PS4 instead, unless you really enjoy paying monthly fees.

As I said in the title good but not great. To sum it up, it is more expensive than the PS4 for less gaming power. Of course there are still exclusives n the Xbox One that you may want, but it may be best to wait till a price drop rather than plunge right in now.

The fact that you all are saying OH THANK GOD XBOX DID A BIG U-TURN. Wasnt it kind of obvious that as soon as they saw this big downfall of their “future gaming style” that they would make themselves seem the better of the two by cancelling it just as the ps3 is compared to the xbox one. ALL HAIL MICROSOFT because they listened to us! ITS SO MUCH BETTER NOW! No. They didnt listen to you, they listened to their wallets.

I don't.. I can't keep up with how often MS change their minds on what they are and aren't going to do. I love the look of the games and most of the new features and especially the control, but the fact they have changed the reviews a couple of times tells me that they are confused as to what the fans want.. Not entirely sure which to get,im more for the xbox as the controller is far more ergonomic and the online community is better but 100$ difference between 2 almost identical consoles in theory. As for those worried about xbox having already reverted things reverted back.well they just wont do that. If they did, sure they will have made some money on the first lot of sales but it would sabotage any hope of a future for xbox so be calm people, xbox wont exactly be reverted back to being a problem child.

Ok, so all the comments have been deleted, fair enough. But I still can't trust Microsoft they only gave in because they knew they were going to lose alot of money as it showed in pre-order sales around the world.

$100 more expensive than the PS4– That's a game right there.

I do however like the exclusives Titanfall and Killer Instinct but that still isn't enough of a reason to get me to buy one at launch.

Just be wary if you get one as it will not surprise me if they try to bring back at least one of those policies later.

Good luck and choose your next-gen console wisely or get both

"Best User Interface."
4 stars"

Microsoft really understand user interfaces, I feel that when it actually comes down to using the console, it will me infinitely better than Sony's.

Specifications can only go so far, when the experience of hardware and software come together it can be great, however I feel Sony's console is a bit too hardware focused for me and that the software remains unappealing.

The Xbox One will be my console of choice this generation because of the services and software, the hardware is pretty decent as well. I do worry that both consoles will not be able to handle 4K gaming at high frame rates so I feel this generation will be a short one.

"Great! But sad about removal of DRM"
5 stars"

Xbox One's DRM was a good thing it allowed far better gaming experiences such as real time lighting instant updates while playing and smarter AI and that's just the beginning. So many people heard 24 hour connection and kinnect always on and hated without listening. It only had to be connected 1 time every 24 hours and it was only 26 mb you could connect your phone and use that. Also don't listen to people in youtube comments because half of the people saying they used to love xbox and now they are switching are Bull s*** and are just PS3 fan boys.

But I accept that microsoft has changed their mind and am still looking forward to Xbox One!

"Wow really-"
3 stars"

I think the fact that mightyape keeps adding things really sums it up. How much does it take to make it worth getting over the ps4– Remember that with the ps4, there are also free-to-play games available day one and if you want to play online (most people should) and get ps plus, you get 2 more free games as well as a free game every month after that. So regardless, you would still effectively get more with a ps4 no matter what is bundled with the xbox one.

This will be a dope console no matter what people think about the drm… last time peoples opinions where based on the specs, but this time the consoles wont have that much of a difference on release date, also, it is about user experience and not the specs, although I will end up with both I will rate the xbox one above, just from past experience and the controller, althought im sure both will be dope

"Best entertainment system"
2 stars"

This looks like it will be an amazing little box for your tv, but when it comes to doing what it was intended for “Game Console”, it falls short. With its timed exclusives and gimmicky controls, there are consoles that do it better, and for cheaper. If you only get an xbox one, you will find yourself missing out on what a game console should be. $750 is too steep just for the new Halo and Gears of war. I would not recommend this for anyone who calls themselves a “Gamer”.
