Description

This book extends the ideas developed in Bonner's previous volumes on the social determinants of health. It provides a critical review of the direct and indirect impact of war in Europe, a quintessential wicked issue. From a human development perspective, 'wicked issues' such as war, becoming a refugee, being impacted by COVID-19, climate change, homelessness, and social injustice all add to the mix of drivers that undermine successful ageing and a fulfilled life. This book provides a unique view of the direct and indirect consequences of the war in Europe from the perspectives of women and children displaced from Ukraine, to those of local authority policy makers and service providers, already under pressure to provide housing, address climate change, and to support the local community during a cost of living crisis. It reviews the socio-economic challenges faced by the UK and other European countries, and also suggests the what the responses to these 'wicked issues' should be.
