I was very surprised when I finally unpacked the box at home. The
Tournament Stick is just amazing! Usually I play on my $400+ Street Fighter IV
Tournament Stick, but this stick could be my new favourite.
It has a couple features that really make it stand-out. Firstly, unlike my
other stick, it is made out of a solid wood cabinet which doubles as storage.
You can put the game, cables and moves list, etc, into the roomy base. Which is
really cool for storage or if you're taking it over to a friend's home.
When you open it, it has brass arms which lock it open. This stops the base
snapping shut while you're getting things out and is a welcome touch.
Also, it features a clear perspex chamber which displays all the inner
workings under the stick overlay and buttons. Pretty crazy, in a good way!
But probably my favourite feature of the stick is this: It has a padded base.
Often I find my SFIV Tourney Stick is a little heavy and can get uncomfortable
when playing with it placed on my lap for extended periods. But this isn't the
case with this stick! The cushioning makes it very comfortable to have placed on
your lap, and after 4 hours of play tonight, it still didn't feel cumbersome,
even though I suspect it is heavier than my other stick due to the wooden
cabinet. (The SFIV one is made of plastic.)
Things to note – the stick is laid out in it's arcade configuration. So
it's definitely going to be better for Mortal Kombat (duh!) but also other
fighting games that use mainly 5 buttons or less. Such as BlazBlue or Dead or
Alive. It does have all the buttons on a standard controller, but the
configuration is definitely better for the aforementioned games.
Also, if you have small hands you won't be able to span the buttons easily.
But if you've had arcade experience with previous titles, you'll know how the
buttons feel already and how they're spaced.
For the price, this stick is weighty and well-made. It has all the bells
& whistles, so I am stoked with my purchase!
As for the game itself, I've only scratched the surface. But the fighting is
back to it's old-school roots, which is awesome. The Challenge Tower is fun and
gives a break to the Arcade mode, which is also supported by the Story Mode. If
you've seen the movie, you'll have familiar nostalgia throughout the cutscenes.
It's cult-classic. The Krypt is back and is sadistically jam-packed with bonus
costumes, unlockable fatalities, art work, etc.
I could go on, but instead stop reading this and get one of these packs
before they're sold-out! Simply amazing value for money.
Cheers, Mighty Ape!
