Description

The rise of Pentecostalism is one of the most important changes in Christianity in the past century. Growing rapidly, it has expanded throughout the world. How many Pentecostals are there in the world? How did Pentecostalism grow so fast? What do Pentecostals believe? What role did revivals play like the Azusa Street Revival in the USA or the Mukti Mission Revival in India? What do Pentecostals experience when they speak in tongues, pray for healing, and seek prosperity? Brill's Encyclopedia of Global Pentecostalism answers such questions, drawing upon disciplines such as anthropology, biblical studies, economics, gender studies, history, theology, and other areas of related interest.

Author Biography:

Michael Wilkinson is professor of sociology and coordinator of the Canadian Pentecostal Research Network at Trinity Western University. He is the author of numerous articles and books on Pentecostalism including After the Revival, Catch the Fire, Pentecostals and the Body, and Global Pentecostal Movements. Connie Au (PhD, University of Birmingham, UK) is a theologian who publishes on Pentecostalism and ecumenism. She does research on Asian Pentecostalism particularly in Chinese context. She also studies ecumenical history and organises ecumenical courses on liturgies for lay people. She translates English theological books relating to church history, liturgy and spirituality into Chinese. Jörg Haustein (Dr. theol., University of Heidelberg) teaches World Christianity at the University of Cambridge. He is one of the co-founders and co-ordinators of the European Research Network on Global Pentecostalism (GloPent.net) and serves as editor of its peer-reviewed journal PentecoStudies. Dr Haustein’s primary research area in the field of Pentecostal Studies is Ethiopia, but he publishes and teaches more widely on Pentecostalism in Africa and worldwide. His work sits at the intersection between anthropology, historiography, and theology, with a special interest in tracing the interplay of global discourses and local diffractions in the study of Pentecostal and Charismatic movements. Todd M. Johnson (PhD, William Carey International University) is the Eva B. and Paul E. Toms Distinguished Professor of Mission and Global Christianity and co-director of the Center for the Study of Global Christianity at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary. Johnson is Visiting Research Fellow at Boston University’s Institute for Culture, Religion and World Affairs leading a research project on international religious demography. He is co-author of the World Christian Encyclopedia (2nd and 3rd editions), co-editor of the Atlas of Global Christianity, and series editor (with Ken Ross) of the 10-volume Edinburgh Companions to Global Christianity series. He is co-editor of the World Christian Database and the World Religion Database (Brill).
