Steven Spielberg's World War One drama, adapted from the 1982 novel by Michael Morurgo, is not entirely family friendly. There are some fairly nasty emotional moments in this story which revolves around love and relationships. Although the prime relationship is broken early on by the separation of young Albert and his beloved horse, Joey, one is held to the turns and tribulations of the plot by the deep desire to see the two re-united. The cinematography is wonderful and the action scenes compelling. I found myself sometimes leaning forward to the screen, drawn into the immediacy and compelling nature of this film. I sighed with satisfaction at the end. The wife cried. Enough said.
