Just got the DSS recently gave it a quick run through and it seems to be pretty good. Im currently using TB EForce Px21's They're an amplified headset so adding the DSS just compliments it well, boosting up the bass and volume. So far I'd say a must have for anyone who's using headsets that dont support 5.1 or 7.1 and want that surround sound experience. I'll comment later in the future if I run into any problems with the DSS.

"these reviews are BS!"

they are just copy and paste jobs by the marketers of this product, just google it and you will see plenty of other review's using exactly the same wording

(I have never used this product, but am interested in getting some 5.1 headphones which led me here)

Purchased on Mighty Ape

I heard about this thing on a message board and decided it was just what I was looking for, and I was stunned to find it was available in New Zealand as I'd never heard of anything like it. I'm amazed Mighty Ape don't advertise it more instead of just leaving it tucked away under PS3 accessories because I think anyone who uses headphones with their console (PS3 or 360) would be interested.

Even if you don't want the surround sound (you can turn it off and just have stereo) I'd still recommend it as you get digital audio plus a volume control, which you need if your headphones don't have one, a base boost and you can even plug an Ipod or similar device into it so you can listen to your own music ingame.

I used to plug my headphones right into the 360 audio adapter or hook an old mini system up to it (for a volume control) but I was never pleased with the sound. Any directional sound came through only one channel so it sounded like it was right in my ear, as if I was only wearing the headphone on one ear. It was really annoying and uncomfortable. With the DSS that's gone completely, even when it's just set to stereo and not surround. I don't know if it's the digital audio or what but it's a huge improvement, and there's no loss of sound quality.

It might not exactly blow your mind, depending on what headphones you use, but it's bound to be an improvement over just the phones. I'd recommend this to anyone who uses headphones on their console.

You might be interested to know there is a DSS 2 which has a couple of extra features but at the time of this review it was only available in the US (for some reason). I might get that one if it ever comes out here.

Description

*Compatible with PC, Xbox 360 and PS3

The Ear Force DSS 5.1/7.1 channel Dolby surround sound processor transforms any stereo analog headset into full, immersive surround sound for playing XBOX, PS3 or PC games and watching movies with Blu-ray or DVD players. It works with any set of stereo analog headphones and is the perfect complement to the Turtle Beach Ear Force series of stereo gaming headsets (X31, X11, XLC, Z1, Z2 and PX21).

The optical digital input easily connects to a game console or media player for Dolby 5.1/7.1 channel surround sound and the analog input can also be used to upgrade analog stereo audio sources to Dolby Pro Logic IIx for virtual surround sound. A bass boost control adds sub-woofer effects for enhanced realism to any audio source.

With the Ear Force DSS, video game and movie fans will be able to hear distinct audio events happening all around them, greatly enhancing the overall experience and rewarding gamers with a newfound competitive edge. DSS users playing games and watching movies on their game consoles will actually hear the 7.1 surround sound from certain 5.1 channel audio tracks via additional “hidden” channels called Dolby EX.
