2 stars "Good, Not Great; Unforgivably Awful Ending"

There are moments in Mass Effect 3 where everything else goes away and it is purely and completely good; Tuchanka, Rannoch, little moments with the characters you've come to know and love. These moments are made all the better for knowing that they are YOUR moments, the result of your choices and actions over the previous two games. When you achieve something momentous in this game you truly feel like you're earned it.

And then the ending comes along and everything is made pointless. I am not exaggerating in any way when I say that this is the worst ending of anything I have ever experienced. It is truly that terrible. It comes out of nowhere, it provides no kind of resolution at all, it's poorly written and not even thematically relevant–even the tone feels completely different to the rest of the game(s). Given everything that came before it feels like a punch to the gut, almost as if BioWare set out to deliberately hurt fans of the franchise, to say “Oh, you cared about these games- These characters- This story- Ahahahaha, what a silly person–WE don't care about it at all, and here's the proof; we have taken hundreds of hours of your life and it was all a bad joke”.

Yes, I'm reacting emotionally to this–dramatically, even. It's because I care about Tali and Garrus and Wrex and the fate of the Quarians and the Geth and the Mass Effect universe in general. It's been an intense journey, but for it to end in this way–in this way that renders everything pointless–is difficult, to say the least.

For everything before the last half hour or so, it's a solid 8/10. Not as good as ME2–especially in terms of writing and intensity–but otherwise very very good indeed. The gameplay is better than ever, streamlined nicely and made complex in good ways.

Including the ending, though, I can't even rate it. Terrible, graceless, insulting and utterly, utterly disappointing.

4 stars "Great game - just try not to think too hard about it"

The illogical and generally unliked ending has been much discussed so I don't intend to reiterate.

But that aside, the gameplay is as awesome as you'd expect from the Mass Effect series. The voice acting is superb and the atmosphere it creates actually makes you really feel you're under the threat of extinction, desperate and doomed. It is also great to see that decisions made in ME 1 and 2 can make a difference.

Overall, great game. One component I personally don't like is online multiplayer which is somewhat required to increase War Readiness. Never a big fan on online gaming but that's just me.

4 stars "Game was brilliant until...."

After waiting months for this game to release, when it finally arrived I was over the moon I ripped open the packaging, quickly looked through all the extra's then slammed the disk into my PS3. As I waited for the day one patch to install I continued to look through the extra's and was delighted with them, with the day one patch all installed I started to play and was blown away by how much better the graphics to the game were. I played for hours and hours, intrigued and astounded by the story line, the characters development and as always the amazing voice acting. After 1 week I got to the end of the game and that's when things started going down hill, the ending (without giving spoilers) was absolutely terrible, I was upset, bewildered and down right angry. 98% of the game was amazing, just for that to be destroyed in the last 10 minutes.

5 stars "Bioware does it again"

Great gameplay and RPG element, pity about the ending but overall one of the best games I've ever played. Definitely a game of the year candidate.

4 stars "Excellent but......."

Ok before I start, as long as they fix the ending this is by far one of the best games I've ever played.

http://blog.bioware.com/…/03/21/4108/

The game is thought provoking, heart warming and sometimes heart breaking. ME3 is an emotional roller coaster (Especially if you have played the others) and plays like a story driven sci-fi movie.

Although shorter than its counterparts (28hrs for me) ME3 makes all the missions feel alot more in depth by adding familiar faces or having a clear reason for you being there.

A few technical and graphical glitches do little to dent the experience and side quests aren't set out as well as they could be in your log.

All in all, 9.5/10, 8/10 if you include the rushed ending that doesn't reflect your choices ingame.

Description

“All told, Mass Effect 3 is an absolutely amazing game” 9.5/10 – IGN

Not everyone will survive. An ancient race known only as “Reapers”, has launched an all-out invasion leaving nothing but a trail of destruction in their wake. Earth Has been taken, the galaxy is on the verge of total annihilation, and you are the only one who can stop them. The price of failure is extinction…

  • You are Commander Shephard, a character that you can forge in your own image.
  • You determine how events will play out, which planets to explore, and whom to form alliances with as you rally a force to eliminate the Reaper threat once and for all.
  • How you wage this war is completely up to you: go into combat with guns blazing or use cover to plan a more tactical assault. Utilise your squad to full effect or take a lone wolf approach. Rain death from a distance or go toe-to-toe with enemies using devastating melee attacks.
  • Mass Effect 3 will react to each decision you make as you play through a truly unique experience of your own creation.

Features:

  • A rich, branding storyline: Experience a sci-fi epic with multiple endings determined by your choices and actions throughout the game.
  • Massive in scope: Battle on many worlds across the galaxy as you unite the ultimate force to take back Earth before it's too late.
  • Large-scale and intelligent enemies: Battle enormous enemies and take on a smarter type of foe that will consistently challenge your best combat tactics and put you on the edge of your seat.
  • Unlock customisable arsenal: Tailor each weapon with devastating upgrades including scopes, barrels and dozens of other unique attachments. Each weapon boasts its own powerful impact and visual flair.
  • Unleash death from afar or go toe-to-toe: Customise your soldier and squad to engage the enemy on your own terms. A huge variety of weapons, abilities and equipment allow you to combat the enemy in your preferred style of play.

Review by IGN

“…All told, Mass Effect 3 is an absolutely amazing game, one that successfully puts a bow on the Mass Effect trilogy while still leaving us hungry for even more. It looks and plays great, but Mass Effect 3’s true strength lies in its ability to tell a deeply-woven story. Better yet, the sheer ambition shown by BioWare in announcing an intersecting trilogy complete with save importation becomes fully realized in Mass Effect 3. BioWare deserves applause for not only having the courage to attempt something like the Mass Effect trilogy, but for pulling it off with such exceptional poise and skill. Mass Effect 3 isn’t the best game ever made. But it’ll certainly be in the conversation for a very long time to come.” 9.5/10
