Lou Reed FEATURING Metallica, not Metallica featuring Lou Reed and this is more a Lou Reed album than it is Metallica.
This is spoken word poetry, of which originated on the east coast of the United States, and has scenes on the east coast and around in other areas of the country. Rather sadly, the droning of Metallica's guitars is something I have heard all before and makes for yawn material. The album has been titled, LouLou, what is up with that- Is that suggesting Lou Reed is a woman-
This album failed miserably as a monetary venture but it did at least give Metallica a reputation for being not afraid to try new things and being rather open minded about music.
Dragon is my favourite track. Supposedly Lou Reed, the client of a prostitute, using spoken word poetry to express to her how much he thinks she doesn't care about him which if you know the prostitution or working girl business, is not necessarily a no no, but can go either way. It can also depend too on where you come from and who knows you plus such and such but maybe we won't go there to save embarassment for their precious sakes.
The main thing that lets this album down is I think Lou Reeds vocal performance could have come across more sincere and serious than it does. I also assume he is trying to give us, the listeners, the perception, that he is drunk and perhaps also stoned, double time (with both marijuana and perhaps anti-psychotics), and just amounts to a train wreck of a mess.
As I said, not a commercial success, but does carry huge morale and rather extraordinary reputation for being not afraid to deviate away from what we have known Metallica to be. If this were solely a Lou Reed work, it would have been more commercially successful I feel.
