"Another dark & excellent DC animation."
5 stars"
Purchased on Mighty Ape

If you're familiar with DC animated movies, then you generally know what to expect, which is something dark, violent & fun. This delivers on all fronts, with the excellent director Jay Oliva (The Dark Knight Returns & Under The Red Hood) who shepherds this towards being one of DC's finest films.

If you're unfamiliar with DC's animation, then trust me when I say this, you'll be in for a shock. This is so dark, it's hard to recommend a kid to be allowed to watch this. It's more violent than the recent live action Batman films. There's beheadings, head shots, and all kinds of other violence. That said, it's nothing too gruesome either, it is M after all, but it definitely pushes it to the edge. If you're a fan of superhero movies, and think that the animation might be too kid friendly, like the Justice League, or Batman cartoons now and from a few years ago, it really is nothing like them at all.

As for the story, it's refreshing as hell to see a DC animation that isn't about Batman, or Superman. Don't get me wrong, they definitely feature in this animation and have really great parts in it too (one of the most interesting Superman depictions, I've seen). The story follows The Flash who wakes up to find he's in an alternate universe where The Flash doesn't exist, Batman, Superman & the rest of the Justice League are wildly different, and much less friendly. It's an interesting mystery, with an ending that you may not quite see coming.

It's just a fun film to sit through, with excellent action, some decent voice acting, music that's almost as good as The Dark Knight Returns', and story/characters that are a blast to watch. If you're a fan of superheroes, especially the DC animated ones, you'll love this. I'd place it just behind TDKR P1 & 2 as my second favourite DC animated movie.

Description

Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox is an animated superhero film, an adaptation of the 2011 comic book crossover “Flashpoint” by Geoff Johns and Andy Kubert. Ron Perlman, Dana Delany and Dee Bradley Baker reprising their roles as Deathstroke, Lois Lane and Etrigan.

We all wish for the chance to go back in time and change things, and for The Flash, that chance is within reach. As a boy, Barry Allen had his life torn apart when his mother was a victim of a violent crime, but now, using his power of super speed, he will traverse time to change that fateful day. His intentions are good, but changing the past has repercussions that could prove disastrous, as a fractured, alternate universe now exists in place of the familiar one.

Stumbling through a twisted reality where even Superman is nowhere to be found, The Flash seeks the trusted wisdom of Batman, only to find a grittier, more violent Dark Knight in his place. The Flash and Batman, with the help of Cyborg, race to restore the original timeline while the alternate world is ravaged by a fierce war between Wonder Woman’s Amazons and the Atlanteans led by a battle-hardened Aquaman.

With breathtaking action and an all-star voice cast featuring Kevin Conroy, C. Thomas Howell and Dana Delany, it’s a bold, emotional vision that will forever alter the landscape of the DC Universe!

The Flashpoint Paradox Review

“Count yourself among Flash's loyal legion of fans? You'll have a blast with The Flashpoint Paradox, and walk away with a few complaints. Love all things DC Comics but consider Flash a peripheral hero to your little slice of the DCU? You'll have a blast, and walk away with a few complaints. Rarely pick up a DC comicbook but greedily gobble down any films or series populated by the denizens of the DC universe? You'll have a blast and… detect a pattern? The latest DCU original animated movie has something to offer DC fans of all stripes, speedsters and non-speedsters alike. And the reason is simple. For better or worse, The Flashpoint Paradox is a Justice League movie first, an Elseworlds tale second and, trailing at a distant third, a solid Flash story last. Fortunately, the alternate timeline heroes and villains – each one more deliciously dark than the last – help make up for the unintended slight until, by movie's end, Flash narrowly inches ahead and proves he can hold his own in the race. JLA or no JLA.”

…JLA junkies with a soft spot for Elseworlds-esque tales will enjoy all the alternate timelining, from its deviously dark heroes and villains to the climactic battles to the death that litter the fray. Striking Studio 4°C animation, terrific voice casting and performances, and a smart adaptation of Geoff Johns and Andy Kubert's “Flashpoint” comic crossover event further overshadow the movie's problem areas, making Paradox an entertaining but flawed entry in the DCU animated canon…The Flashpoint Paradox is an easy one to recommend to DCU fans."
