Nobody watches a Godzilla movie for the human characters. Which is a pity, because this film spends an inordinate amount of time with them, and though there are no actually bad performances, it fails to make its primary protagonist more compelling than the supporting characters, especially Brian Cranston. On the plus side, the tone of the movie is brilliant and the action scenes are breathtaking to behold, especially when you finally get to see the Big Guy himself. Watch out for a particular scene that makes a parachute drop into one of the eeriest I've seen in a long while.
