GM09b, Brass coin of the Faceless Man, drilled for use as charm or pendant.
This is a brass replica of the Iron Coin of the Faceless Man. The actual iron coin (item GM09) features importantly in author George R.R. Martin's novels (now also an HBO show) where it turns out to have extraordinary significance for young Arya Stark.
This piece is actually a replica of the iron coin, made of brass using the same hand-cut steel dies as the original, and cancelled by drilling. The obverse features the shadowy form of the Faceless Man… representing a guild of assassins who will take on any job, for the right price, and who have the ability to change their faces at will. The reverse features the cryptic inscription VALAR DOHAERIS, VALAR MORGULIS… along with an encipherment of that message in the entwined capital letters VDVM. At top on reverse is a smaller encipherment, lacking the “D”. That symbol is actually the indicia of value and drilling it out cancels the sinister significance of the coin and renders it harmless for casual use (incidentally making it easy to hang on a jump-ring). The iron coin is considered to be unsuitable for wearing even when drilled as the iron tends to leave rusty marks on the skin, but numerous requests have been made for drilled coins to wear. So the solution is to use brass.
