Keeping his fans waiting for six long years (has it really been that long?), P-Money (aka Peter Wadams) has finally issued his third album.

Some might criticise Wadams for the delay, but none can deny the anticipation. While he may have been out of the spotlight, he has been collaborating behind the scenes with many respected and prominent New Zealand artists and musicians.

Yet “Everything” is not quite all that its title promises. The titular single has been out for two years. It almost seems big names like Vince Harder, Scribe and PNC are more of the main attraction than Wadams himself, although appearances by lesser-known Kiwi names like Meryl Cassie are very welcome.

Lovers of P-Money's work will buy it, even if they have heard much of it before, but as a “comeback” album it is lacking in focus and doesn't concentrate enough on P-Money himself.

Skip this one unless you're a die-hard fan.

Description

Renowned producer and lightning-fast turntablist P-Money has raised the stakes once again with his highly anticipated third studio album Everything, set for release on Monday 3 May.   By extending his team of collaborators, consolidating his production skills, and sidestepping genre boxes, Everything presents a winner’s podium of P-Money’s bold new directions - 13 fresh cuts that map the coordinates of his moves into house, hip hop, rock, R&B and beyond.

Like one of P-Money’s famed DJ sets seamlessly joining the dots between different sounds, Everything is unafraid to make links between music designed to motivate the dance floor, whether it’s the swaggering rock of ‘Falling Down’, the sly boogie funk of ‘Dance With You’ or the sinister stadium rave of ‘Angels’.    “Music has changed and I’ve matured too,” says P-Money. “I gained the confidence to step out of the box and try different things - I feel like I’ve got nothing to lose now. This album is funk, soul, disco, rap, rock, r&b… it’s everything.”

The new album’s stellar line-up of guest artists step up to P-Money’s new tempos with ease, including David Dallas and Aaradhna riding the jumped-up club rhythms of current radio smash single ‘Say Yeah’, and Scribe tearing up the remix to ‘Everything’, the chart-topping single that introduced the golden voice of newcomer Vince Harder and set the scene for the genre-hopping of this album.   "That piece of music was the most unique of all the tracks I was working on at the time, so I thought ‘why not take a leap of faith and put that one out?’” says P-Money of the single ‘Everything’. “People smile when they hear that song - they dance, they sing, they enjoy it. That’s how I know it’s a winner.”

What connects the songs from the new album to P-Money’s acclaimed back catalogue is his relentless pursuit of what makes a great record, challenging himself, his collaborators and his fans. Music has moved forward and P-Money has embraced these changes, crafting an album that is set to defy expectations.   “I had so much fun making this record,” he says. “That’s number one for me, above and beyond technique or production and intellectualism.

I care about these sounds - I care about these songs. I put everything into it and it means everything to me. And there's a bit of everything for everybody.”
