People often make the mistake of thinking of District 9 as merely a new flavour in science fiction. What it successfully manages to paint itself as however, is a clever sci-fi take on South Africa's apartheid years. It follows the central character of Wikus Van De Merwe in the role of the oppressor, as circumstance shift his perspective to that of the oppressed.
Born out of the demise of an attempt at a Halo movie, Neill Blomkamp delivers an engaging piece in collaboration with NZ's own production giant, Peter Jackson. District 9 is definitely worth a look.
