"Classic Horror as you have never seen it before."
5 stars"

Most people have already seen John Carpenter's Halloween on either DVD (or even VHS). But they haven't REALLY seen it until you have watched it on blu-ray.

This 30th anniversary edition puts the DVD version to shame. Not only is the print better, and the stunning John Carpenter soundtrack sharper, but the movie is once again restored to ‘theatre quality’ viewing. The blu-ray version also includes special features, including a 90 minute documentary, trailers and more.

If you want to experience the classic, that is John Carpenter's Halloween, buy this. If you already own it on DVD, spend the money to upgrade to blu-ray and you won't be disappointed.

When you talk classic horror, there are a few movies that come to mind but none that epitomise the genre quite like Halloween and its iconic harbinger of death, Michael Myers. Easily one of John Carpenter's best horror's if not the best, Halloween on blu-ray has to be seen to be believed. The clarity is amazing, the 1978 original footage looks crystal-clear in high def. Just don't focus too much on the blood (which doesn't look so real in HD).

The cast of Halloween is one aspect that makes this movie so great with actors such as Donald Pleasance bringing some of that hardened ‘brit’ stability to an otherwise fairly unknown list of young actors. Jamie Lee Curtis' rising star was more or less born with her role in this movie. So with that kind of background, who wouldn't consider Halloween a classic?

The 30th anniversary blu-ray version offers some tasty extras that reveal a whole lot of behind-the-scenes information and commentary from most of the stars and crew including John Carpenter and Jamie Lee Curtis.

There's no mistaking that Halloween on blu-ray is a straight-up collector's item if ever there was one, and for horror fans, it should be a serious consideration for the xmas stocking this year. Michael Myers never looked so crystal-clear creepy, even if his mask was the ugliest mold of William Shatner's face ever created!

4 out of 5 stars only because I feel that this release should have had more extras.

Review

Halloween is as pure and undiluted as its title. In the small town of Haddonfield, Illinois, a teenage baby sitter tries to survive a Halloween night of relentless terror, during which a knife-wielding maniac goes after the town's hormonally charged youths. Director John Carpenter takes this simple situation and orchestrates a superbly mounted symphony of horrors. It's a movie much scarier for its dark spaces and ominous camera movements than for its explicit bloodletting (which is actually minimal). Composed by Carpenter himself, the movie's freaky music sets the tone; and his script (cowritten with Debra Hill) is laced with references to other horror pictures, especially Psycho. The baby sitter is played by Jamie Lee Curtis, the real-life daughter of Psycho victim Janet Leigh; and the obsessed policeman played by Donald Pleasence is named Sam Loomis, after John Gavin's character in Psycho. In the end, though, Halloween stands on its own as an uncannily frightening experience--it's one of those movies that had audiences literally jumping out of their seats and shouting at the screen. ("No! Don't drop that knife!") Produced on a low budget, the picture turned a monster profit, and spawned many sequels, none of which approached the 1978 original. Curtis returned for two more installments: 1981's dismal Halloween II, which picked up the story the day after the unfortunate events, and 1998's occasionally gripping Halloween H20, which proved the former baby sitter was still haunted after 20 years. --Robert Horton
