after only watching the movie and a few of the tv series episodes this movie fills in all of the why's and gives good background into all of the moments where the Cylonhumans are talking to each other + tones more backstory

In no way can this be appreciated as a stand-alone film. Consider it more as a special featurette for the main series. A great gift for a Battlestar Galactica fan (especially more casual ones who may not know about this product) or fans of Dean Stockwell (Number 1, and who isn't-).
