Great gift for those people that have everything. Never have a boring road trip again.

"Boring. A big list much like what you will find on an app" Purchased on Mighty Ape

Such a book you would think would come with decent photographs so you can see where you are being enticed to visit. The book really is boring to look at. Not suitable for the coffee table........i'd be better off just browsing the subject on google. Sentiments similarly described by all that have picked it up.

Description

First published in 2006, this completely updated second edition of 1001 Best Things to See and Do in New Zealand (Hodder Moa, 2009) by experienced New Zealand travel author Peter Janssen showcases the diverse locations and activities available in this fascinating country.

Despite the small size of New Zealand in comparison to its closet neighbour Australia, there is an incredibly varied range of things to see and do, with a wide range of holiday experiences available.

Peter Janssen helps tourists to get the most from their time in New Zealand no matter what their budget or interests. Dividing the North and South Islands into districts, Janssen lists regular events, activities, general points of interest and locations of historical or local significance.

An initial map showing the district divisions is followed by entries grouped for each of these 32 areas, 16 for each Island. A map of each Island is included at the beginning of each section, however these are extremely general, highlighting only the major cities and highways. There are 50 colour images included.

Each entry contains the following features (where relevant):

  • Distance from nearest major town or indication of how far off a major highway the site is located.
  • Venue website and/or contact phone number
  • General information (1 – 3 paragraphs) about the location/activity
  • Opening hours
  • Whether visitors can expect an entry fee and any additional charges
  • A three star rating system indicating whether the venue is worth a trip, worth a detour, or simply worth visiting if already travelling through the area.

Getting the Most From a Holiday in New Zealand

Activities and venues range from the well known to places far off the beaten tourist track. From luxury spas to bushwalking trails, hot springs to the world’s largest totara tree, film festivals to kayaking adventures, there is something to tempt all ages, tastes and energy levels.

In conjunction with a road atlas and accommodation information, 1001 Things to See and Do in New Zealand will ensure that tourists find venues and activities to suit their tastes and New Zealanders make the most of their own local area.

About the author

Peter Janssen has written several New Zealand travel guides including Vineyard Visits – 150 of New Zealand's Best (HarperCollins NZ, 2008) and Touring the Natural Wonders of New Zealand (New Holland NZ, 2009).

Born and raised in Huntly in the Waikato, Janssen was inspired to compile the information in 1001 Things to See and Do in New Zealand by his own travels through his homeland and the need he saw for a New Zealand travel guide that would be useful to both overseas visitors and locals wanting to enjoy the many amazing activities available in their local area.
