We've just received a stunning shipment of hot products from
acclaimed London based fashion designer – Orla
Kiely.
Orla – affectionately dubbed the ‘Queen of Prints’ by her legion
of fans, turned a childhood obsession with patterns in nature – into her
earliest print designs, relishing their ability to be turned into highly
stylized, regimented and repetitive patterns. Her childhood family home has too
evidently been an influential factor in the designs Orla produces today, with
her earliest memories stemming from her olive-green Formica cupboards and orange
gloss ceilings. Orla's clean orderly repeat constructions and her fondness for
boldness of scale, are in essence contemporary – while this nostalgia for all
things mid century, keeps her patterns charming, comforting, uplifting and
instantly recognisable.
I love Orla's unique use of
colour and her formulaic graphic design work and find both elements very
soothing. Orla's iconic imagery is being applied to an ever increasing range of
interior accessories including, kitchen and tableware, bathware, and stationery,
proving that the trend (and our love affair!) for all things mid century – is
here to stay!
