GTX 1080 is Released!!!

By Andy

FINALLY!!

It would have been super early in May when NVIDIA officially announced their brand spanking new graphics cards. And now I am finally allowed to share all that I know about these bad boys!

It looks like New Zealand is only getting involved with the Founders Edition models. I have not heard any reasoning as to why this is at the moment, but here is what we have!

ASUS GeForce GTX 1080 Founders Edition
Gigabyte GeForce GTX 1080 Founders Edition
EVGA GeForce GTX 1080 Founders Edition

All of these cards have the exact same spec from what I can tell. Boasting a mighty 1733MHz boost clock and 8GB of insanely fast GDDR5X video RAM, they are set to make easy work of ANY games you decide to throw at them.

Performance wise, we are looking at around 20–30% on top of the previous generation's top dog, the GTX 980 TI, along with lowered temperatures and even a lower power draw to boot. Only smiles on our side of things!

Pre-orders are up! Stock is incredibly limited first drop. We are expecting to be shipping the cards on the 2nd of June. We are hoping the second drop to cards to be maybe a week after the first, but I would get in quick if you didn't want to wait a second!

In the mean time… You can jump onto the NVIDIA site to nab the latest version of drivers which is set to run the new GPU's! Exciting times! XD

What a absolute rip off! Time to import.

    Why is this so expensive?
They are selling for 700usd from nvidia, which is 1045nzd. Why the price markup of almost 500 dollars? Shipping isn't that expensive...

It's a cynical price point that works something like this - convert to NZ... $1045, add GST... $1200. This is what could pay if you brought one back in your luggage from the US and declared it like you should.

Import an individual card through the mail... $NZ1045... clear customs add GST and about $100 in inspection fees at the border. They are saying that another $100ish competes with your postage and 'inconvenience'. BTW import 10 cards and the inspection fee is the same as for one card.

Why the asus version is $100 more at some retailers is anyones guess though, one even has the nerve to say RRP is over $1600 for them.

When prices were "leaked", my enthusiasm to pick up a 1080/70 disappeared. If we are to believe that suppliers buy the cards (1080) for USD699/ea, then I would import and pay the taxes. Would love to support local, but what about local supporting us. And it is not a stab at Mighty Ape, as this is the speculated market price. Very disappointing as a consumer.

Totally agree with Gary but its worse than that. US$699 is the RRP in the US for the Founders Ed. not the Wholesale Price.

Better to line govt and courier pockets than to reward the price gouging that happens in NZ and Aus which is often caused buy the guys the retailers are supplied by (the licensed importers).

Yup will be waiting for better prices. It's a bit ridiculous.

http://pricespy.co.nz/product.php?p=3692646 they're the cheapest in NZ (29/5) according to Price Spy. Not exactly a "rip-off"

I Agree with all these negative comments, the RRP that everyone is using to calculate the 1045 price, which to be more accurate is actually $1064.96 + GST is what we would pay not them, as a retailer they would be scoring it ATLEAST $100 less than we would. $1220 for us to buy ourselves. its a bit ridiculous if you ask me. and mighty ape is the cheapest seller as well so others are much worse.
