A text which examines the ways English has changed linguistically in the 20th century. It concentrates on standard varieties of English taking an historical rather than sociolinguistic view. Key features include: the examination of changes in vocabulary, grammarm pronounciation and usage and includes “engineering” changes, such as avoiding sexist language; coverage which requires no prior knowledge of linguistics, older stages of English or historical knowledge of other languages; a discussion of the theoretical implications of the changes which have occurred; and the inclusion of exercises to test comprehension of the text and suggestions of topics for further research. The book is designed for first and second year undergraduates and those taking courses in general linguistics or English.
