Awesome Tapes From Africa are releasing a re-issue of Ghanaian DJ, producer and rapper DJ Katapila’s Trotro album. DJ Katapila started producing music in the late 90’s at the age of 39,and as his set progressed, he began adding live rapping over instrumental breaks.
After he got Fruity Loops he started to make music that blended the influence of GA, and Western House music. After its initial release in 2009, Trotro grew in popularity through the mobile DJ scene and bootlegging. Trotro is a unique and compelling record closely related to the heavy sounds of Detroit Techno and Chicago Acid house music. DJ Katapila’s energy on the tracks makes you forget that you can’t understand some of the Dialect he uses, though it still makes you move.
