New Year’s Eve 1944, Ostrau, Czechoslovakia. As the Russian Army mobilizes just 150 kilometers away, a family gathers to plan their escape.

Hoping that American forces will occupy it, author George Mueck’s father chooses Dresden as their destination. By May 5, 1945, the family reaches Prague-just as the Prague uprising is beginning. Two days later, the Nazis surrender.

Facing homelessness, for George’s father, one thing was certain: they had to leave Europe to overcome the tragic memories and start anew without being constantly reminded of the past. They traveled to South America and finally to Canada, where they settled.

Author Biography

George Mueck is the chairman of TMGI (The Mueck Group Inc.), an international management advisory firm specializing in crisis management and developing international export markets, joint ventures, strategic alliances, technology transfer, and licensing agreements. He holds a PhD, a doctorate of business administration (DBA) majoring in finance and economics, an MCI, an LLB, and an engineering diploma. He is also a Buckley School of Public Speaking graduate. He is fluent in English, German, Spanish, and French, can converse in Italian, and understands Dutch and Scandinavian languages. George resides in Ontario, Canada.
