Is it possible to become a modern-day Thoreau? Monroe Morris decided to become one. He would give up all worldly ambition, in order to focus upon his spiritual and intellectual development. He would fashion for himself, a life of simplicity. Seeking to live a contemplative existence, close to nature, he would retire from the world. He would isolate from the hectic demands of the public arena. Expansive thoughts would be pondered. He would meditate upon all matters great and small. He chose an old stone house to become his Walden Pond. The building sat on abandoned farmland down by the Legendary River. Here, in near isolation, is where he and his beloved Ruby established their household. Their humble nest became a home where their lives blossomed. Living a simple existence in the country, they raised their children to be worthy citizens of the world. Their home, not an escape from the world, was its own fruitful destination. The old stone house became a sanctuary, divorced from the anxious, frenetic marketplace. The passage of time became an adventure of daily relevance and personal achievement. And their future discovered the secret of residing in the now. But the location was also a battleground; where Monroe would wrestle with his demons, and confront his own human weaknesses and doubts. He might be able to isolate from the world, but he found, to comprehend the world, he had to understand himself first. On the Legendary, as he pursued the divine, Monroe found the simplicity he sought. This was where his daily occupation became the slow but persistent yearning for that which was greater than himself. The old stone house was a place of quiet and serenity; where he would discover his humanity and hear the song of the infinite.
