Reflexivity

As a research tool, reflexivity has particular application to the health and social sciences. Qualitative researchers who practice reflexivity think carefully about the process and production of research and as a result the quality of their work may be much improved. Reflexivity is a valuable tool that empowers by opening up a more radical consciousness, but it often proves initially difficult to grasp so the editors of this book have amassed a collection of researchers to offer six maps of the process; this book is an essential guide to reflexive qualitative research. It should enable the reader to examine the impact of the position, perspective and presence of the researcher. It provides insights through examining personal responses and interpersonal dynamics, opening up the unconscious motivations and implicit assumptions in the researcher’s approach. As such, the book should encourage best research practices – highly appropriate in the modern climate of increased public and professional scrutiny of research.

Author Biography

Linda Finlay teaches Psychology with the Open University, UK, and is an Academic Consultant offering training and mentorship on qualitative research in health care. She is currently working towards registration as an Integrative psychotherapist. She has published widely on topics relating to psychosocial occupational therapy, group work and qualitative research.
