Pieces of a Puzzle features four entertaining stories: Building Boundaries, How to make Friends, Our Own World, and Where are the Words? Accompanied by colorful illustrations, the stories chronicle five ethnically diverse children who have been diagnosed with ASD and how they interact with their families and the world around them. In the book, they explore different ways to overcome the communication and language barriers that they face. The stories show understanding, love, explorations, and family in the most kid-friendly way. The characters are all of different ethnicities so that children can see characters that look like them.
Author Biography
A native of gritty Baltimore City, Howard C. Perkins III, M.Ed. has consistently beat the statistics that an urban city places on a young male of color. The only child, born to a large family education was always very important to the family growing up. Education in Baltimore City Public Schools, college was always on the horizon, and after graduating, he was accepted into Morgan State University. Where he completed his Bachelors of Science in Communications. After working in the finance world of corporate America at Toyota Financial Services and at T.Rowe Price, a change was needed. During his last year, he volunteered with Americorps where he was tasked with working in middle school classrooms, to help reinforce classroom lessons. The fire to teach was lit to teach. Several years later in 2010, he stepped into the classroom for the first time. In 2016 He matriculated from Coppin State University with a Masters in Education in the area of Special Education, completing the program with a 3.8 and becoming a member of Kappa Delta Phi National Education Honor Society. Howard is also a member of the Council of Exceptional Children. Howard is currently a Special Education Coordinator In NE Washington D.C. He holds valid Maryland State Department Advanced Professional Teacher Certificate and a District of Columbia Professional Teacher Certification. He is currently apart of the Washington Teachers Union Teacher Leader 2016-2017 Cohort. He is a devoted son and father to two amazing children Layla and Darien. In 2014, he wrote his first children’s book Pieces Of A Puzzle.
