Henri Charri re naci en Saint- tienne-de-Lugdar s, Francia, el 16 de noviembre de 1906, y muri en Madrid el 29 de julio de 1973. Hu rfano de padre desde 1917, se alist en la Armada Francesa en 1923. All sirvi durante dos a os, y, a su regreso, se cas y se adentr en la vida de los bajos fondos parisinos. El 26 de octubre de 1931 es condenado a trabajos forzados en cadena perpetua por el asesinato del proxeneta Roland le Petit, un crimen que l siempre neg haber cometido. Con su ingreso en prisi n da comienzo la extraordinaria historia que l mismo se encarg de narrar en su c lebre Papillon (1969), adaptada al cine en una extraordinaria actuaci n de Steve McQueen y Dustin Hoffman.
