Oracle Database Administration: Essential Reference

The Oracle database administrator (DBA) performs an important set of tasks at an Oracle site: database monitoring, backup and recovery, troubleshooting, and tuning for reliability and performance. The DBA also plays a role in initial database design, system configuration, installation, and security planning. This book provides a quick reference to the myriad details an Oracle DBA needs on a day-to-day basis to help do his or her job well. Part One provides information and examples of how to perform a variety of critical DBA functions. The information in this section is presented in roughly the same sequence that these functions would be performed as the DBA plans and implements a new Oracle installation. Part Two provides detailed reference information (command syntax, etc) needed to perform DBA functions.

Author Biography

David C. Kreines is the manager of database services for Rhodia, Inc., a subsidiary of Rhone-Poulenc S.A., and the coauthor of Oracle Scripts (O’Reilly & Associates, 1998). Dave has worked with Oracle as a developer and database administrator since 1985, on a wide variety of platforms from PCs to mainframes. He is an Oracle Certified Professional, certified as a DBA, and has been a frequent contributor to Oracle conferences, user groups, and publications, both in the United States and in Europe. Dave served two terms as president of the International Oracle Users Group-Americas and spent ten years on the board of directors. Brian Laskey is a senior database administrator for Management Information Consulting (MIC), a Virginia-based consulting firm that specializes in assisting Fortune 1000 companies in ERP systems integration and e-commerce. Brian has been an Oracle database administrator for 11 years, working with Oracle on MVS, VMS, UNIX, NT, DOS, and Windows. He is an Oracle Certified Professional, certified as a DBA for both Oracle 7.3 and Oracle 8.0. He has presented papers at the IOUW and IOUG-A Live! conferences, as well as at regional conferences. He is currently serving his second term as vice president of finance of the International Oracle Users Group-Americas, and has been a member of the board of directors of the IOUG-A for the past two years. He has just been re-elected to the IOUG-A board for a term to expire in 2001.
