This book is a guide on how to use the punctuation and Tajweed signs to apply the basic Tajweed rules. The Qur’anic text includes punctuation and Tajweed signs on every Aya. These signs provide hints on how to recite the Qur’an with proper Tajweed. Following these signs should allow you to apply many basic Tajweed rules even without fully understanding them. How do these signs help us in Tajweed?
Let’s look at the following example, which demonstrates how the Noon Sakina letter “ن” is marked in different ways in the Qur’an to provide a hint on which Tajweed rule should be applied and how to pronounce the Noon Sakina “ن”
Look at the letter “ن” in the following Ayat: قُتِلَ ٱلۡإِنسَـٰنُ مَآ أَكۡفَرَهُ ۥ (١٧) مِنۡ أَىِّ شَىۡءٍ خَلَقَهُ ۥ (١٨) مِن نُّطۡفَةٍ خَلَقَهُ ۥ فَقَدَّرَهُ ۥ (١٩)(Surat Abasa, Aya 17-19)
The letter “ن” was written one time without any marks; it was left blank (in Aya 17), and the second time it was written with a Sukoon “نۡ” (in Aya 18), while the third time it was written without any marks but there is a Shadda on the next letter (in Aya 19).
What is the significance of writing the same letter “ ن “ in different ways?
To answer this question, Tajweed rules require us to pronounce the letters in certain ways that are unique to the applicable Tajweed rule. The Noon Sakina letter “ن” will always have one of the following Tajweed rules: Izhar, Idgham, Ikhfa’, or Qalb. Based on which Tajweed rule to apply, the letter “ن” will be either:
Pronounced clearly
Replaced with a Ghunna (a nasal sound)
Totally dropped
Converted into Meem (م)
Each one of those pronunciations is marked differently in the Quranic text, and if we study those markings and understand them, we will be able to apply certain Tajweed rules simply by following those markings. In this book, in sha Allah we will discuss and analyze the punctuation and Tajweed signs/marks and learn how to use them to apply many of the basic Tajweed rules even if we don’t have prior knowledge or we are not sure which rule is supposed to be applied.
