PETER WIERTS is an Economist in the Directorate General for Economic and Financial Affairs of the European Commission, Belgium, and a member of the Centre for Euro-Asian Studies at the University of Reading, UK. His research interests and publications focus on fiscal policy in EMU, financial markets and economic policy co-ordination. SERVAAS DEROOSE is Director of the ‘Macroeconomy of the Euro Area and the Union’ at the European Commission, Belgium. He is a member of the Economic and Financial Committee.
