English dialects from all over the world are included from Sydney to Newfoundland and from Scotland to the Appalachians. The essays are soundly based on empirical work, but are also of importance for their theoretical and/or methodological contribution to the fields of sociolinguistics and dialectology. The book includes fifteen papers which contain data on the grammar of English dialects and which describe varieties of the language which are of interest for their own sake.
